The Irish Whale and Dolphin Group (IWDG) website reports that Dusty is suffering from severe erupted lesions on her tail stock. Diver John Flynn took photos on October 8th which are on the IWDG news page. It looks like some ghastly Alien-type parasite under the skin, but at present we have no idea of what it actually is or what might have caused it. We have not seen anything similar on other dolphins.
Keith swam with Dusty eight days previously on 30th September, when there was no sign of any lesions and she seemed fine, so they have erupted quickly. The IWDG has asked an English vet with experience of cetaceans, Paul Jepson, to comment.
