Fungie Update: Dec 2002

For the last 3-4 years October to January have been prime swimming time with Fungie, the Dingle Dolphin. It is probably the best time to swim with Fungie as boat activity has dropped off and he may be looking for entertainment or company.

This 'swimming season' has proven difficult as Fungie is being particularly unpredictable. Regular swimmers have been finding it hard to get down to Sladin due to both weather conditions and personal commitments which may be adding or causing Fungie's occasional indifference to swimmers. But then again when he is 'on form' he is great.

I personally have witnessed this up / down behaviour in the last week. Last Wednesday I swam with Nick and Suzanne and we had a brilliant swim with Fungie jumping, circling and bobbing around us. At one stage Fungie must have done over 30 'circles' with Suzanne whilst playing. But today, even though we are excited about swimming because of the good weather, Fungie was not. He stayed a good hundred metres from us at most times, swimming in feeding patterns. Not even a look in our direction.

Fungie has become increasingly indifferent to swimmers over the years but always keeps the regulars happy (and occasional visitors). There is another two months to go of this season so lets hope that he gets back to his energetic best soon.
