Risso's dolphins in Greystones, Wicklow

A report from the IWDG states that there are Risso's dolphins off our Eastern coast.

"In the last week there have been a spate of Risso’s dolphin sightings from the Greystones area, extending south beyond the Breaches in Kilcoole and on to Newcastle.
On Thurs. 22nd Charlie Kavanagh observed 5 Risso’s dolphins just outside the mouth of Greystones Harbour. This we thought was a once off, but we were wrong. As birder Mick Boyle from Greystones confirmed what we presume to be the same group, as it also comprised 2 juveniles in the same area on Tues. 27th this week off Greystones. Another independent observer who saw these dolphins around noon off the South beach estimated that there were between 6-10 animals in this group.
It gets better, as last night Thurs. 29th while on a coastguard training exercise between Greystones and Newcastle they estimated around 50 Risso’s well spread out while in transit south. Part of this activity comprised a pod of c20 dolphins seen breaching, close to the back of the La Touche Hotel in Greystones. The dolphins approached close enough to confirm their ID beyond doubt.
Today, Fri. 30th at 19:00 another 3-4 Risso’s were observed off the Tern colony at the Breaches in Kilcoole by Mick and at least one other IWDG member who could positively identify the dolphins as Risso’s.
We have no idea how long this run of sightings will last, so you have been advised, get out there fast with your binoculars.
Oh, for those of you in West Cork, there was a pod of c8 pilot whales observed for several hours this morning off Garnish Island, Glengarrif, Bantry Bay. By the time IWDG got there, they had left the area. This is the 2nd time in little over a month that this species has visited the area.
That’s all for now.
